A MAN has been ordered to pay a total of £1,084 after household waste was allowed to pile up in the back yard of a property in Lower Darwen.

Brian Almond, of Branch Road, was fined £600 for breach of an abatement notice, under Section 80 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, by causing a nuisance to local residents by not disposing of his rubbish properly.

Blackburn Magistrates’ Court heard on April 9 Almond had failed to comply with the notice, and had not removed household rubbish from his back yard, after several attempts by the council to engage with him.

He was also ordered to pay £342 costs, and £142 compensating for the clearance of the rubbish.

Tony Watson, head of environment and public protection at Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: “This is another successful prosecution in a long line of actions taken to ensure that those who blight our communities are punished.”
