A DAY centre for people with learning and physical disabilities has reopened – just over a year after it was controversially shut down.

Around £150,000 has been invested in Marsden Resource Centre, Nelson, by Lancashire County Council ahead of its relaunch.

The decision to reuse the Rigby Street building is the latest chapter in the site’s chequered recent history.

It’s future was first brought into question in 2009 and then a shut-down was confirmed in 2012.

But a growing demand for its services has led to a rethink in 2014 and now around 30 people each day are expected to use the centre’s services, and work towards increasing their independence.

County councillor Tony Martin, adult and community services cabinet member, said: “We’re extre- mely pleased to be able to open this refurbished centre, with its range of improved facilities.

“For example, we've completely redecorated the building, including new floor coverings and ceiling tiles, and installed new bathrooms and kitchens, together with improving general access.

“This means that young people with learning difficulties, especially those with more complex needs, will receive high-quality help and support, together with good access to other resources within their local community.”Former county councillor George Adam launched a campaign to save the centre five years ago.

Later letters were sent to users claiming that they no longer fulfilled the ‘criteria’ for using the service.

The centre is expected to cater for young people from across East Lancashire and not just the Pendle area.
