PLANS to build a ‘secure, safe development to cater for an aging population’ in Clayton-le-Moors have been revealed.

A total of 13 bungalows will be built on the site of a former sports and social club, on land off Moor Street, if the council gives developers the green light.

It is proposed ownership of the 10 one-bedroom and three two-bedroom properties will be restricted to the over-55s, who will access a central courtyard lead-ing to their homes through gated access.

The site housed the social club, known locally as the middle club, until it was demolished. It has stood empty for several years since.

The street includes a row of terraced houses, the Clayton Youth and Community Club, and is two streets away from Mercer Park.

In documents lodged with the council, Gareth Storey Associates LLP, on behalf of developer A Ogden from Blacko, said: “The site has previously had permission for 10 three-bedroom townhou-ses. This expired in 2011.

“Funding is in place for the construction phase and initial talks with local estate agents has taken place.

Councillor Nick Coll-ingridge said he was surprised at the nature of the plans, but added: “Any development that is in keeping with the area, we are happy about.”
