PEOPLE in East Lancashire are being asked to help look after their local waterways by joining volunteer teams.

The call comes from the Canal & River Trust — the charity that cares for 2,000 miles of waterways in England and Wales — which is recruiting people to a number of its Towpath Taskforce teams.

The taskforces encourage people to help protect some of Lancashire’s most important heritage and wildlife habitats.

The teams carry out a variety of jobs including planting wildflowers and bulbs, clearing overgrowth, painting the locks and cutting back vegetation overhanging the towpaths.

Matt Taylor, volunteer co-ordinator for the Canal and River Trust, said: “Lancashire’s waterways are a proud part of the region’s history. If people could spare a few hours, it will make the canals a much nicer place to visit.”
