Winning singer to perform at Blackburn Cathedral

A FORMER winner of the Kathleen Ferrier Bursary for young singers is returning to Blackburn Cathedral to take a leading role in a performance of the St John Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Bass singer David Shipley, who won the prize in 2008, is currently a scholar on the opera course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, studying voice with Janice Chapman.

David has featured as a soloist with many fine orchestras and ensembles, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Monteverdi Choir, and English Baroque Soloists, and the Classical Opera Company.

Cathedral director of music Sam Hudson said of the music: “This is a very powerful piece, taking listeners on a musical journey through Christ’s final few days encompassing his betrayal, arrest and crucifixion.

“Combine that with the stunning architecture and the visual art of the cathedral and it will no doubt be an emotive and spiritual evening.”

The St John Passion is being performed this Saturday, at 7pm, and features Joshua Ellicott as the Evangelist, and David Shipley as Christus, the Renaissance Singers, and the 18th century Sinfonia orchestra.

Tickets from £5 are available at King George’s Hall Box Office on 0844 847 1664.
