A WOMAN has been ordered to pay back thousands of pounds of housing benefit she wrongly claimed.

Tania Bleasdale of Brisbane Street, Clayton-le-Moors, pleaded guilty to two allegations of failing to declare changes in her circumstances.

Blackburn Magistrates’ Court heard the 40-year-old failed to declare her partner, who was in full-time employment, was living with her.

She also failed to tell officials she was earning more after changing her job.

As well as being told to pay back an overpayment of £5,180.92, Bleasdale will have to carry out 40 hours of unpaid work and pay costs of £110.

Cabinet member for finances at Hyndburn Council, Coun Joan Smith, said: “The message is clear – make sure your benefits claims are up-to-date and in order.

“Otherwise we will pursue you, and you could end up in court.”
