THE former head of care at Derian House Children’s Hospice was due to appear before a disciplinary board today.

Susan Allen faces two allegations of medical misconduct, said to have happened at the Astley Village hospice, and has been summoned to London for a two-day hearing.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) will hear accusations that, in her role as a registered nurse, she failed to ‘monitor, record and/or take appropriate action when accidents and incidents were reported’ to her between 2010 and 2012 on more than one occasion.

The second allegation is that she ‘failed to monitor, record and/or take appropriate action when medication errors were reported’ on more than one occasion between 2011 and 2012.

An inspection carried out by the Care Quality Commission in August 2012, while Mrs Allen was listed as the registered manager, found shortfalls in medication systems, and no evidence that they had been investigated.

The report said: “Children and young people were not protected against the risks of unsafe management of medication by means of making appropriate arrangements for the recording of medicines. Audits had been carried out of the medication systems; however, these were brief and lacked detail.

“We also noted there was no evidence to indicate shortfalls found as part of the audit checks had been addressed and resolved. “Similarly, incidents reported by staff concerning medication errors and problems with the medication systems had not been investigated and no action had been taken to minimise the risk of reoccurrence.”

Depending on the outcome of the hearing, and whether the allegations against her are proven, Ms Allen could face a range of sanctions, including being struck off.

Nobody at the hospice could be reached for comment over the weekend.
