YOUNG farmers showed off their bartering skills at this year’s ‘Cattle Over Wintering’ competition, held at Gisburn Auction Mart.

And Rachel Harrison, a Slaidburn Young Farmers’ Club member, was declared ‘supreme champion’ of the year.

Now in its second year, the challenge involves young farmers, from across Lancashire and Yorkshire, buying cattle in the autumn, feeding them through the winter, and then offering them for show, and sale, for the best price.

Judges selected 16-year-old Rachel as the winner after she bought her heifer last autumn for £990 and sold it for £1,360 this year, earning her a gross margin profit of £370.
