A SUPPORT group for Asian women has held its award ceremony.

Accrington-based AAWAZ held the event at the town hall, and saw local dignitaries present, including Hyndburn Mayor Coun Judith Addison.

Chief officer Zulekha Dala said the group has made a positive difference since it was formed in 1997.

She said: “It’s been a phenomenal success and we have seen so many women participate.

“By speaking English confidently, you can speak for yourself and don’t need to depend on anybody.”

The ceremony also saw three students from Rhyddings High School given an award for a heritage project.

President of the Rotary Club of Church and Oswaldtwistle, Doreen Lawton, was also commended for being a community figurehead in Hyndburn.
