CLARETS mad former spin doctor Alastair Campbell was finally able to get one over his political pal Jack Straw after nearly 35 years.

The ex-Number 10 spokesman received a text message shortly after the final whistle to remind him that Burnley’s 2-1 win was the first since Mr Straw became Blackburn’s MP in 1979.

Mr Campbell said: “It was worth the wait. We held our nerve and it was a great day. I was very relieved to see David Dunn go off later on because he always get inside our heads for derbies.”

Former BBC weatherman John Kettley said: “Everyone has been surprised by Burnley this year but I saw them against Derby last week and they are so resilient in defence.

“We know they’ve got two great goalscorers but they’ve also got a very good goalkeeper in Tom Heaton. It’s only three points at the end of the day - we should get 10 for beating that lot!”

TV star Dave Fishwick, who sponsors a stand at Turf Moor and is a regular, said: “It was fantastic. I couldn’t believe it. It’s a really historic day.

“I think that this will definitely help us towards automatic promotion because Burnley just seem like they are unstoppable at the moment.

“It would fabulous for the town if we could get back to the Premier League.”

Even Olympic gold medallist Steven Burke, an ardent Manchester United fan, got in on the act, tweeting his congratulations to Burnley FC and defender Kieran Trippier in particular.

Former Claret Ade Akinbiyi was among a host of ex-players praising the current crop, saying that the town must have been ‘buzzing’.
