ARSON-hit public toilets in Clitheroe could be set to receive a £33,000 makeover.

The facilities in the castle grounds were subject to an arson attack in 2012 when vandals set fire to toilet paper in a basin.

Borough councillors will vote on Tuesday whether to earmark the funding which could be used from May next year.

In a report to the council’s community services committee, head of service Terry Longden said the facilities were in a ‘very poor condition and required investment to bring them up to a modern standard’.

He said the lack of baby changing facilities was ‘not ideal’ and that the ‘poor lighting’ creates a ‘feeling of insecurity’.

He also said there was an ‘unpleasant environment’ and that work would include replacing the cubicles, lighting, flooring, toilets and hand-washing basins.

According to a recent ‘footfall monitoring exercise’ carried out by the council, the toilets are used an average of 300 times per day.

If approved, the work could be completed by August 2015, and council bosses are hoping that the new facilities will last for up to 25 years.

A Ribble Valley Borough Council spokesman said: “The Castle Field toilets are in a poor condition and require investment to bring them up to a modern standard.

“They are heavily used and were subject to an arson attack two years ago, when vandals set fire to toilet paper in a hand basin.

“There have also been a couple of incidents where worktops have been scorched with lighters or matches.

“The refurbishment will provide an improved service for residents and visitors.”

Clitheroe town councillor Simon O’Rourke said: “They are used quite a lot and especially in the summer. They put out an image of Clitheroe and if they are not suitable that reflects badly on the town.

“I hope that if the work is approved that people will start to respect the facilities a bit more.”
