A NEW Scout group is set to be opened in Langho after a ‘huge’ demand from young people in the area.

The new group will be called ‘St Mary’s Langho’ and will include Beavers and Cubs sections.

It is hope that a Scout section will be set up shortly afterwards.

Scout chiefs have decided to set up the new sections after the waiting list for the existing group, St Leonard’s, reached more than a year long.

It is hoped that the group will hold its meetings at St Mary’s Church Hall and will be supported by the church.

The exact opening date has not yet been confirmed and adult volunteers are currently being sought to help run the groups.

An open evening will also be held closer to Easter for young people to sign up.

The announcement comes after the news that St Michael and St John’s Scout Group in Clitheroe will be revived in the summer after more than three years since its last meeting.

Ian Macdonald, district commissioner of Clitheroe Scouts, said: “It’s fantastic that so many young people want to get involved in scouting.

“We hope to get the sections up and running shortly after Easter.

“It all hinges on getting adults to volunteer to lead the groups.

“There are plenty of young people who are interested but if we don’t get enough adults coming forward then the group can’t be run.

“It’s very positive that a lot of young people want to get involved with getting outdoors and taking part in adventurous activities.

“I hope that an opening date can be set and that enough volunteers come forward.

“In the long run it will mean that more young people will get involved in scouting across the Clitheroe area.”
