A RIBBLE Valley composer is hoping to land a job with a Hollywood legend after overcoming his battle with alcoholism.

Andy Oliver, 35, has entered a worldwide competition to work alongside Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer in LA and has submitted a two minute piece that he hopes will be voted for by the public.

Andy, who is from Hartlepool, moved to Chatburn in 2006 and recently picked up music again after struggling with alcoholism since his teenage years.

A former child actor, Andy appeared in Byker Grove before becoming more involved in music.

He has recently finished recording an album with former Fleetwood Mac star Jeremy Spencer and is set to embark on a world tour in March with his folk band.

Andy, who works part-time at Precious at Whalley, also composed the soundtracks to feature films Dream On and Celluloid, released last year.

Hans Zimmer composed the soundtracks to a host of blockbusters including 12 Years A Slave, Gladiator and The Dark Knight and won an Oscar for his music for The Lion King.

He will judge the competition with his colleagues and will announce the three finalists next month.

The lucky three will be invited to LA to work alongside him before he picks an overall winner.

Andy said: “It would be a dream come true if I was picked and it would cap an amazing 12 months. Working with Jeremy Spencer was amazing and it was great to have him in the studio in Clitheroe.

“This would cap a massive turnaround for me and if I had not given the drink up five years ago I would not be in this position right now.

“It started when I was a teenager and while my friends were growing up, I just carried on drinking more and more. I’m very lucky that the friends that I have around me helped me through it and it would be life-changing to be picked.
