FLAMES were spotted coming from a manhole cover in a Blackburn town centre street.

Fire crews from Blackburn were called to the junction of Duke Street and Northgate and found underground cables on fire, at 6.15pm last night.

The firefighters spent an hour putting the flames out. The section was isolated by electricians, a fire service spokesman said.

Maybe the businesses who found they had a disrupted power supply etc would appreciate knowing why?
