MOTORISTS are being urged to take care on a narrow country lane in Colne after a car ended up in a ditch.

Drivers had to be diverted around Red Lane for more than an hour after a Nissan Micra and a Vauxhall Agila were involved in a collision.

The Agila ended up in its side in a ditch and the Micra received serious damage to its rear nearside wing as a result of the incident.

Fire crews cut a woman in her 60s free from the Mirca. She was taken to Airedale General Hospital hospital with minor injuries.

Now two senior councillors have urged drivers to take extra care when using the route, a popular cut-through between Barrowford and Colne.

Coun Joe Cooney, Pendle council leader and Vivary Bridge ward member, said: “It goes from being rather a wide road to very narrow in places very quickly.

“It is a windy country lane, which goes uphill and then downhill and people need to be sensible when travelling along it.

“When you come out of Red Lane at the Colne end there is also a 20mph zone outside the school.”

Coun David Clegg, who also represents Vivary Bridge, told the Telegraph that there were already restrictions preventing lorries and larger vehicles from using Red Lane.

He said: “It is not a road where you can see very far ahead so there probably wouldn’t be a need for passing points.

“A lot of this is down to the state of the North Valley because people are always going to be tempted to nip down the back roads to avoid the traffic.”
