A CARE home has failed to meet two essential standards after watchdogs found faeces on a wall and residents wearing ‘several layers of clothing’ to keep warm.

Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) also found ‘unpleasant odours’ in two bedrooms at Mill Lodge Residential Care Home in Great Harwood.

The Belmont Road home failed two out of three standards examined, and has been told to improve its cleanliness, infection control and the suitability of the premises.

The inspectors said after their visit in January: “In one bedroom the carpet was soiled and smelt of urine.

“In another bedroom a crash mat, the wall next to the bed and a soft toy on the bed were all stained with faeces.

“We saw the commode in one bedroom was rusty and stained with faeces.

“The ceiling tiles in this room were also stained.

“There was an unpleasant odour in two of the bedrooms.

“The carpet in one of these bedrooms was very dirty and in the other the carpet was sticky.”

The washbasins and vanity units were dirty in almost all the bedrooms, they added.

Although signed cleaning schedules indicated all areas of the home were regularly cleaned, it was ‘clear this had not been done thoroughly’, the CQC said.

Concerns were also raised about some areas of the home being too cold, with residents seen to be wearing several layers of clothing.

Various furnishings were also found to be missing.

Prya Jhugroo, the home’s manager, said: “We are undertaking a programme of refurbishment and the concerns that have been raised will all be dealt with within the timescale given to us by the CQC.”
