Hundreds of East Lancashire drivers not paying for fuel

Lancashire Telegraph: Hundreds of East Lancashire drivers not paying for fuel Hundreds of East Lancashire drivers not paying for fuel

MORE than 500 East Lancashire motorists drove off without paying for fuel last year, new figures have revealed.

The figure is at a five-year high, and more than 90 per cent got away with it, data released under the Freedom of Information Act revealed.

The thieves have been slammed by Hyndburn and Haslingden MP Graham Jones, who said they are responsible for forcing up prices at the pump.

Last year, 504 motorists failed to pay for petrol or diesel, compared to 452 in 2008.

Despite more thefts being reported, the number of offenders being caught fell from 55 in 2008 to just 50 last year.

Last week, a 41-year-old Rishton woman admitted stealing £136 worth of diesel from a Great Harwood petrol station. Susan Jones, of Bridge Street, filled her car with fuel before driving off.

Inspector James Black, from Lancashire Police, said: “It is important to point out that the police takes business crime seriously.”

I think its time the police put number plate recognition cameras at petrol stations then if your cars not taxed mot'd or insured its an offence to let you fill up. Its time to hit back and get these scum off the roads i'm sick of having to pay for the thieving scum. Or have a thumb print scanner before you fill up that would sort the scum out.

Well - I note that mmcikk has had two votes down .

I think that is because he put in two words too many .

"its an offence to let you fill up" , should have read -

"its an offence to fill up" .

I am surprised that the two "down voters" did not realise this .

I drive a lot on motorways and there are many NPRC's .

Fine by me - I am 100% legal - I drive a very powerful car .

Anyway , I was driving yesterday behind a scruffy Vauxhall in Blackburn .

I had already observed he had no brake lights , kept my distance , so when he slammed on , I could easily stop . Sorry , no whiplash claims for you lot .

I totally agree with mmickk .

I am sick of the "scum" , who make me pay more for insurance , and for fuel .

I used to be in the retail trade - we had a saying -
"The Honest Customers pay for the Shoplifters" .

How sad .

How about programmed pumps, where you pay, up front and receive a measured amount to that value?
This isn't my idea, it was utilised by paraffin machines, in the late 50's and 60's, so should work on the larger scale, I'd have thought.

With respect, that's ok for drivers who have a credit or debit card but what about those who have no access to this method of payment?
Otherwise, a good idea.

Darrener - an excellent way to go about it. That's what ASDA do in Blackburn.
.
and to Harry . . . . the people you are concerned about are driving a CAR, likely to cost a grand ( or much more ) . . . . they pay for insurance, maintenance, tax disk, MOT, plus other motoring costs . . . . they have to have money. If they are not paying then they are an out and out THIEF !

They have been doing this in the States for over 15 years, very few drive offs there. ( cops would probably shoot you if you did )

Then you pre pay at the kiosk say £30 and the pump stops automatically
Simple really

Another choice do what Americans do, pay for fuel before you fill up. The pumps stop as soon as you reach the amount you've paid for.

The 'people I am concerned about' as you put it are the people who don't have a credit or debit card for whatever reason that may be. Not everyone does! Nobody said anything about them not having money. And for you to accuse people who haven't got a bank card as 'an out and out theif' is, quite frankly, tantamount to being, not just judgemental but libelous!
You need to choose your words more carefully.
