BURNLEY Golf Club looks set to build a £50,000 tuit- ion centre to help young players.

The club, off Glen View Road, hopes the develop- ment will strengthen its existing links with the University of Central Lan- cashire and Burnley Coll- ege.

The proposed tuition centre and practice bays, sited at the Approach Way side of the course, are expected to receive planning consent, desp-ite opposition from some residents.

A new on-course toilet block also forms part of the plans, which will be funded using a Sport England grant the club received last August.

Habergham Eaves Par- ish Council has expr-essed concern about the potential loss of light to nearby homes resulting from the construction of the tuition bays.

And six residents have also written letters of objection to Burnley Bor- ough Council.

Lancashire County Coun- cil has also submitted concerns about the prac- tice bays’ potential imp-act on the safety of people using the public foot-path which crosses the practice ground.

Burnley Council is exp- ected to delegate approv- al of the work to its head of housing and dev- elopment control, pend-ing further recommend-ations from LCC’s high- ways department.

Addressing the conc-erns, a Burnley Council report said: “Light to the properties would not be affected, and the residents are most unlik- ely to suffer any distur-bance over and above the existing activities.”

The report added: “Stud- ents would be under the constant supervision of a fully-qualified person, who would be alert to any health and safety iss- ues.

“The studio will have a large net which can be pulled across the front of the building to stop any balls going onto the practice ground.”

The ambitious club is currently renovating its club house, with work ongoing on the lounge area, as it seeks to boost member numbers.
