Lancashire Telegraph: Knitters to target the nukes in East Lancashire Knitters to target the nukes in East Lancashire

ANTI-nuclear campaigners will turn to knitting to promote peace in East Lancashire.

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) has launched the Wool Against Weapons initiative, and members in East Lancashire plan to knit a scarf that will stretch from a weapons factory in Aldermaston to an assembly plant in Burghfield — a distance of around seven miles.

Each person will knit a section, which will be assembled and put on display in the bandstand in Burnley town centre, on August 6.

CND will also launch Nukewatch, and said it would track unmarked convoys carrying nuclear warheads through Lancashire on their way to Scotland.

A spokesperson said: “It is not an overstatement to say the detonation of one of the warheads would turn us all to toast.

“Each one is eight times more powerful than the one dropped on Hiroshima at the end of the Second World War, causing the death of 140,000 people.”

Au contraire, it's one of the clearest examples of an overstatement I've ever heard. Silly spokesperson.

CND: have you approached Warburtons for sponsorship? Your knitting would fit well with their adverts too.
