I don't whether I have got this exactly right but it seems that 700k for a generator with an output no bigger than an average family car engine is being sold as if it would supply the entire village of Whalley. In fact its stuffed after 35 people put the kettle on during the adverts and basically its just a toy to make green trendies feel good while everyone else pays for the subsidy. The whole project has all the hallmarks of an Investment Scam to enrich the main promoters but the Co2 Scam is on its last legs now so the subsidy could be cut in future leaving the foolish investors out of pocket permanently ?

Community schemes like these sell energy to the national grid. The profits made are not used to stuff the pockets of city spivs but are used to fund community projects in the area.

The River Calder flows through Whalley. If the power it creates can be tapped and sold to the national grid, why shouldn't the profits go to the people of Whalley?

These low head hydro schemes are just another embarrassingly stupid attempt to deflect attention away from the real problem - that people are selfish and greedy and will do nothing to save energy if it in any way inconveniences them. They just want to carry on consuming more and more trashy consumer goods that demand more and more energy.

You can't just read a book any more, it has to be an energy-consuming tablet. Kids can't just play outside, they have to gawp at an energy-consuming X-box or text their friends on an energy-consuming phone. And what's the first thing people buy with an unexpected windfall? A gas-guzzling SUV.

These so-called `green energy' devices are simply another example of rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic.

And just like wind turbines these low head hydros are also desperately inefficient, almost always failing to produce the amount of energy predicted and completely unviable without a constant stream of subsidy. Even worse, they kill fish and cause serious damage to the river environment.

Just look at the Settle hydro - currently completely out of action, having hardly generated anything all year, and as well as being useless it's effectively destroyed the salmon fishing upstream from it. £410k, and for what?

Many countries in Europe - Sweden, for example - have now stopped subsidising them because of the environmental damage they cause and are actively removing them just as the idiot politicians in the UK, desperate to appear green at any cost, pour public money down the drain in subsidies for them.

If you want to know the truth and have the time, watch a film called `The End of the River'. The link is - http://www.youtube.c

Vw but as links often don't work on this website just Google The End of the River' and it's the first hit.

It's also instructive to read an article in The Spectator entitled `DUPED! The great hydro-electric con trick' - again, Googling will get you there if the following link doesn't work - http://www.spectator

But of course where there's a nice bit of dosh to be made from government handouts who gives a toss about the poor old environment?

Good post the I checked out what you said about Settle Hydro:

Settle Hydro was established as an ‘Industrial and Provident Society for the Benefit of the Community’ with the specific purpose of owning the Settle Weir Hydro Electric Scheme. The Society will generate revenue by selling ‘green’ hydro-electricity.

Any surplus revenue will be used by the Society to benefit the local community through its twin aims of regenerating the local economy and promoting the environmental sustainability of Settle District.

Being a pioneer means that a certain amount of what we do, as in any 'start up' engineering company, however well planned, is speculative. Certain aspects of the scheme were unavoidably more expensive that we anticipated, and the current unseasonably low rainfall has meant a pressure on our cash flow which, whilst manageable, we did not expect. We also realise that the amount of interest in people coming to see the scheme is far greater than even we anticipated and these people have to be accommodated by ensuring the site is safe and accessible for all.

In order to underpin the viability of the company in the interests of our current shareholders, and so we can work on ways of increasing the output, the directors have decided to release a limited number of additional shares, both to enable us to improve the scheme, and to reduce the cash flow pressure. Please go to the membership Page for details of how to apply.

The funds raised from the share issue will fund a public-spirited ‘not-for-profit’ organisation and any investment in Settle Hydro Ltd should be seen as a social and not a financial investment.

This is the best laugh I have had all week but the serious point is that everyone in the country is paying the new age equivalent of a Medieval religious indulgence to subsidise the high priests of the eco-fascist Co2 quasi-religion. The truth about Agenda 21 and the Co2 Scam is going to emerge pretty shortly, no global warming for the last at least 15 years yet Co2 concentrations up 10%, even though its total has always been too miniscule to make any difference to the climate. It obvious to anyone with a working brain that its the Sun which controls our weather and climate, one British guy Piers Corbyn has been accurately predicting the weather both here and in the US almost spot on to the day based on solar observations at lest a moth ahead.

Of course the BBC wont have anything to do with him because their pension scheme is heavily invested it the success of the Co2 fraud and the propagation of wind farms and other alleged renewables all of which require fossil fuel backup. Now the Corporate-Nazi UK government dictatorship are suggesting using Diesel generators as backup, so its Big Oil that wins and proves the Trojan horse environmental groups like WWF and FoE were working for their alleged worst enemy all along. People need to remember that it was BP and Shell backing Corporate-Nazi Gordon Brown to push for global carbon trading at Copenhagen in 2009 and Ed Miliband was the architect of the 2008 Climate Change Act which by now is probably responsible for 20% extra on all our energy bills !

Brossen99, how does an electricity generation scheme owned by local people promote a 'Corporate Nazi' agenda? Surely such schemes outside the control of the big corproates should be exactly what you want. Why would you want all electricity generation to be in the hands of 'Corporate Nazis'?
