PENDLE MP Andrew Stephenson has welcomed news of Kelbrook Parish Council’s plans to tackle a growth of Japanese knotweed on Kelbrook Beck.

Japanese knotweed came to Britain in the 1800s as an ornamental plant but has since become widespread, especially alongside roads and rivers.

It can cause damage to buildings, or block water channels if left to grow.

Following contact from Mr Stephenson, working on behalf of concerned residents, a plan of action has been agreed.

Pendle Borough Council’s environmental action group have been authorised to treat the knotweed and members of the parish council have voted to set aside funds for the work, due to begin in early spring.

Mr Stephenson said: “This was a problem that had been building for some years. I am delighted that action will now be taken.

“I would like to thank those at Kelbrook Parish Council who I know have been pushing for a way forwards for some time.”
