A FORMAL planning application for a new Aldi store in Clitheroe has been submitted to Ribble Valley Borough Council.

The German food chain announced its intentions in October to build a new store on the former Barkers Garden Centre site, in Whalley Road.

The plans, which have been co-submitted by Rawdon Investments Ltd, also include the construction of a ‘non-food’ retail unit.

A public consultation was held in October, at which 66per cent of the 114 people who attended said that they approved, or partially approved, of the development.

Twenty per cent of residents said that they were opposed to the plan.

The company has previously said that the new store, which could include 95 car parking spaces, will create 50 jobs for residents.

The town already has four supermarkets; Tesco, in Duck Street; Sainsbury’s, in Moor Lane; Lidl, in Shawbridge Street; and Booths, in Station Road.
