PRIMARY school children had the chance to experience life as Second World War evacuees for the day.

Children at St Paul’s RC Primary School in Feniscowles, Blackburn have been learning about wartime experiences as part of their history classes.

To mark the end of the learning about the war the Year 6 pupils came to school dressed as evacuees.

Throughout the day, the children learned how to make to and mend.

Cooking classes also showed the children how to get by on a rationed diet.

The 10 and 11-year-olds made honeycakes and learned how to sew on buttons and patch holes in clothing.

Children also made models of wartime airplanes.

Year Six teacher Joanne Cowell said: “We’ve been studying the Second World War and they have worked really hard, so we had the day as an end of topic celebration.

“It really helped them to put in use all the different things we had learned.

“They had a brilliant time learning the different skills and wanted to know when we were going to do it again.”
