SNOOKER ace Steve Davis will be showing children how to shoot for maths excellence.

The six-times world champion is the guest of honour at a launch event which will cue the introduction of snooker in primary schools.

The launch event at Accrington Academy will be attended by children from several primaries linked with the high school.

Young people at the school have for some years used snooker as a daily taught activity to support the development of English and maths.

The sport requires geometry skills as well as the ability to add-up scores.

Now sixth formers are passing on their skills to other schools in a bid to help boost achievement in maths.

Principal Andy O’Brien said: “It was great to see our primary schools get involved with the snooker coaching session.

“It was also a nice experience for them to meet Steve Davis too — particularly after his ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’ fame.” Mr O’Brien said the scheme to get primary schools involved had also taught their sixth formers a great deal about their own teaching skills.

He said: “As a teaching method, this programme has enabled our sixth form students to experience mentoring and coaching younger students.

“Our motto is the ‘best in everyone’ and their coaching work is really demonstrating this.”

Sixth formers have been receiving specialist training since the inaugural Community WPBSA World Snooker Coach Certificate was launched at Accrington Academy last year.
