THE BACKERS of the proposed Burnley High School said a consultation into the plans has been a success.

Chapel Street, who are behind the bid for Burnley’s first free school, said they had the backing of parents in particular.

Overall their consultation reported that 59 per cent of the 200 respondents backed the plan.

Their figures show 44 per cent strongly agree and 15 per cent agree that a new secondary school was needed in the area.

A spokeswoman said: “The results of the consultation into Burnley High School have been collected, and it is clear that local parents are keen for the state-funded free school to open in September.

“Of those who responded to the consultation, over 43 per cent have a child who would be eligible to attend in either 2014 or later.

“The majority of these respondents either strongly agree or agree that a new school is needed.

“Such support is fantastic news and reiterates the desire for a new school within the local community specialising in science, technology, engineering and maths with a focus on sustainability and project-based learning. Burnley High School will be child centred, family focused and community minded and operate with an inclusive Christian ethos.”

The school is currently awaiting the go ahead from the Department for Education regarding funding and specifics regarding a site.
