Pensioner, 81, in serious condition after youth attack in Blackburn

First published in News

AN elderly lady was last night in a serious condition in hospital after being assaulted by two youths.

The 81-year-old pensioner was walking to the post office in Whalley Banks, Blackburn when she stopped to put her hood up and put her bag down on the floor.

She was then approached by two youths who knocked her to the floor.

The woman suffered a fractured femur in the fall, and was taken to hospital when she had to undergo an operation.

A police spokeswoman said the lady’s condition was serious, and the injuries could be life-threatening.

The woman’s bag was not stolen by the youths, but it is unclear yet whether anything was taken from it.

Two passers-by helped the lady into nearby Premier Flooring & Furniture, where the owner, Amjad Rafiq, called an ambulance.

Mr Rafiq, 36, said: “She was struggling to stand up, so I just gave her a chair to sit down, called her husband, and called the ambulance.

“I helped her as much as I could. She was 81, so she wasn’t exactly young, and she said she’d had an operation on her knee, so was trying to protect that, but ended up with an injury on the other side.

“It’s wrong, an old lady was just walking along, doing her own thing, there’s no words to describe it to be honest.

“We don’t normally have trouble like this here, it’s not nice.”

The police spokeswoman said: “We want to track down the people who helped the lady into the shop, or anybody else that saw it, it’s quite a busy area.”

The incident happened at around noon on Thursday and the offenders were described as two males, one Asian, and the other white.

Anyone with information can contact police on 101 or r call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

There is absolutely no respect for anybody, I can not comprehend how young men could even have a thought of harming a defenceless elderly lady. If they are caught the sentence will not reflect the damage done to this lady. It is high time for the decent people of this country to stand up and say to the powers that be, enough is enough, gloves off and get extremely tough with violent criminals. we should also make the judiciary more publicly accountable. We could start a petition on something like 38 degrees, when enough signatures are collected the government must hold a debate on the issue. This can be done by social media, I hope someone could word such a petition and ensure people nationwide could get involved. It is time for collective action.

Jeff that's utter nonsense, why on earth would any passerby go to prison or be punished for intervening in a street robbery on an 81 year old victim?

As long as the force used by a good samaritan isn't grossly disproportionate (an example of such force would be maybe stampin on the offenders head repeatedly after you had knocked him out) then no Police force in the country would Take action against them and certainly no court would convict them.
Under section 3 of the criminal law act, a person may use such force as is reasonable in the circumstances in, amongst other things, the prevention of crime.

Just for the record, I personally would have no.issue with anybody using grossly disproportionate force on these two filth bags.

Juan,
You are spot on the brats parents would have been the same as the brats of children are now. So I suppose the best solution would be to take the sh1t heads down a back alley. And hammer the living daylights out of them, then do the same to the kids
