AN ACCRINGTON charity shop worker said he felt ‘sick to the stomach’ after burglars targeted the premises for the fifth time in three years.

Volunteers at Hyndburn Stray Dogs In Need came across a smashed door and discovered items were missing after being burgled in the early hours of Monday.

The Whalley Road shop, which was established in 2000, was also targeted in 2011 and police are currently tracking down CCTV footage of the incident.

Officers said no arrests had been made.

The shop is now appealing for a new till after the last one, containing £25, was taken during the break-in.

Stephen Wood, animal welfare officer at the charity, said: “You just feel sick to your stomach whenever this happens.

“I feel sorry for the volunteers who had to come across it.

“Because they work so hard to make the shop so clean and tidy.

“We normally leave the till open because it happens so often that we would rather them take the small amount in there and leave the till.

“They are hard to come by at a reasonable price and we would appeal to anyone who has one to donate it to us.

“We have 20 volunteers here and it will affect them all.

“We are also going to consider installing our own CCTV footage and a new alarm.

“It’s very distressing and upsetting when this sort of this happens.” A police spokeswoman said: “We received a call around midnight on Monday after a passerby spotted the bottom panel of the door was smashed.

“We are currently making inquiries into the incident.

“We are tracking down CCTV footage of the incident.

“No arrests have been made at this point.”
