Hopes for Gisburn scarecrow festival

First published in News

A SCARECROW festival could be held in Gisburn for the first time later this year.

An organising committee made up of villagers is being put together to hold the event this summer.

It follows the success of similar festivals eleswher in East lancashire, including Trawden and Higham.

The plans were discussed a Gisburn Festival Hall committee meeting this week and volunteers are being sought to get involved and share their ideas.

The community event could link in with the village’s annual gala which helped to raise money for local groups and causes last year.

No date has been official set for the new event and villagers have been encouraged to submit their ideas as soon as possible.

An appeal for volunteers has been made through the Gisburn Community Facebook page.

Gisburn villager, David Waters, said: “This could turn out to be a great community event that could become an annual occurrence.

“No firm details have been decided yet but I hope it gets off the ground.

“It would be a great chance for the whole village to get together and also bring other people to the village as well.

“It could be held in July and link in with the village gala or it could be held over a bank holiday weekend.

“It’s an event that would involved both adults and children involved which is always good.”

Giles Bridge, chairman of the Gisburn Festival Hall committee, said: “People are trying to work out if it’s feasible at the moment but I hope it gets off the ground.

“It could turn out to be a real community asset and be a great annual event.

“I hope all the groups in the village get involved in some way.”
