EAST Lancashire MEP Sajjad Karim has welcomed the news that Lancashire-based Westinghouse has invested around £100m in three new nuclear plants in Cumbria.

Expected to come online from 2024, when fully operational the Moorside site will provide around seven per cent of the UK's energy requirements from secure low carbon energy.

Mr Karim, who sits on the European Parliament's Industry, Research and Energy Committee, said: "This is great news for both Lancashire and Cumbria, boosting our local and national economy and providing thousands of jobs during the construction phase.

"Cumbria has a tremendous record in the nuclear industry. I have visited Sellafield and seen to he neighbouring site and am delighted that these new nuclear power stations will ensure the long term continuity of the industry in the county as well as offering the potential for considerable skilled jobs.”
