PROPOSALS have been drawn up to provide a zebra crossing outside a Burnley primary school.

Lancashire County Council is investigating the possibility of introducing a crossing outside St James’s Lanehead Primary School, in Briercliffe Road.

The authority said the road needed work ‘in order to improve safety for vulnerable pedestrians crossing at this location’.

A report to John Fillis, the county council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Following investigations, a proposal has been developed to provide a zebra crossing at the location of the current school crossing patrol which serves both St James’s Lanehead and Holly Grove primary schools.

“The aim of the proposal is to improve safety for vulnerable pedestrians at this location.

“It will be of benefit both for the safety of children from St James’s Lanehead Primary School and for children getting off the bus at the nearby stop.”

Borough and county councillors have called for road safety improvement outside the school.

Under the proposals, School Keep Clear markings would be positioned to the east and west of the crossing to cover the school’s pedestrian entrances.

A consultation on the £26,150 scheme received no objections.
