ROADSIDE checks have been carried out to stop scrap metal thieves, drink drivers and taxis operating against the law.

Representatives from Lancashire police, Blackburn with Darwen Council and HMRC, were at Ewood Coach Park yesterday as part of their Christmas crackdown.

One scrap metal vehicle was taken off the road and another was given three points for bald tyres.

Six taxis and other work and commercial vehicles were stopped but were not found to be flouting the law.

Coun Jim Smith, executive member for the environment, said: “This was a successful operation and further drives home the importance of following these new regulations and licensing conditions.

“These roadside checks are a vital way of making sure the rules are being adhered to and we will continue to crackdown on illegal scrap metal activity.”
