BLACKBURN’s The Mall shopping centre’s environmental credentials have been recognised with three ‘green’ awards.

It has been named as a ‘Green World Ambassador for 2014’ after winning two national prizes.

The first was a Green Apple Built Environment and Architectural Heritage Awards for energy-saving LED lighting installation, trialled in an area of the shopping centre.

After beating 200 other nominations, the Mall received a trophy and certificate from Doreen Lawrence, mother of murder victim Stephen Lawrence, who was training to be an architect.

Last month it received another Green Apple, Gold for Environmental Best Practice, for its continued efforts to reduce waste.

In 2012 The Mall Blackburn recycled approximately 45 tonnes of plastic saving, equal to two un-laden London double decker buses.

Mall Blackburn General Manager Loraine Jones said: “It is wonderful to gain such prestigious recognition.”
