ENGINEERING in Burnley has been given another boost with the opening of a new education centre at one of the town’s super schools.

Sir John Thursby Community College opened its new on site Engineering and Vocational Education Centre this week.

The new centre at the school, in Eastern Avenue, follows hot on the heels of the opening of the University Technical College, in Trafalgar Street, in September.

It will enable the school to help meet students’ needs, with a range of subjects available to study using state-of-the-art and industry standard facilities and equipment, some of which has been kindly provided by Calico.

David Burton, headteacher at Sir John Thursby, said: “We are delighted to provide such fantastic facilities for our students to ensure they can achieve the best in all subjects, sports, music, the arts, debating and many other areas including fundraising for charity.”

Sir John Thursby has offered students the option of studying engineering or a range of construction and mechanics courses alongside all science subjects, maths and further maths at GCSE level.

Most subjects achieve results above the national average and Sir John Thursby achieved its best ever results this summer with a rise of 10 per cent making it one of the most improved schools in the country The new centre was opened by Mark Crabtree, from Burnley-based Oscar-winning sound engineering firm AMS Neve, and former student Muthassir Hussain, who is now studying engineering at Oxford University.
