THOUSANDS of people hurt themselves skiing every year, but now NHS chiefs believe the sport can actually help people recover from injuries.

East Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has allocated £5,000 for Ski Rossendale to help patients regain posture, balance and self-confidence after an injury or ill health.

Patients can be referred to the project by their GP or hospital, with a 12-week programme being offered at dry ski slope in Haslingden Old Road.

Dr Peter Williams, a Bacup GP and CCG clinical lead for Rossendale, said: “I am confident that this exciting, new innovation will help in restoring the confidence of patients following an operation, injury or period of ill-health. The benefits of fresh air and exercise include increased mental wellness, higher levels of energy and a stronger immune system.

“Fresh air can lower body temperature, refresh our cells, helps our lungs function and improve our sense of well-being.”

Debbie Nash, volunteer co-ordinator at Ski Rossendale, was delighted with the funding.

She said: “This support from the CCG means we can buy a new ski chair for people with lower limb impairment and train more instructors to support patients with injuries so that they can overcome them.”

This year the slope celebrates 40 years of existence.
