AN East Lancashire comedian has launched his latest ‘underdog’ Christmas single.

Former Brierfield man Matt Whistler is taking on the big hitters with his creation ‘Robots in his mash’ in his third festive chart bid.

Matt, who now lives in Brighton, is fascinated with artistically designed robots and has showcased his own street art at New York's trendy Yotel in May this year.

The former Mansfield High student said: “I would love to say there was a deep reason behind the link with mashed potato, but it’s just exploring the world of randomness. It’s the underdog of Christmas.

“We’ve only put the song on SoundCloud at the moment, but I’ve uploaded it to Radio One’s new artists section, it was played on an FM radio station in Brighton on Tuesday and I’m hoping stations in East Lancashire will play it as well.

“We always create a video to go with the song and that is in the final stages of editing.”

In 2010 Matt led a campaign to get The Trashmen’s Surfin’ Bird to Christmas number one.

The song made it to three in the charts, but the campaign was picked up by Radio One DJ Scott Mills and the video Matt made to go with the song was viewed by more than 400,000 people. And two years ago he created a video to Shakin’ Stevens’ hit, Merry Christmas Everyone.

The video showed Matt sledging down a snowy road in Brighton on a tea tray completely naked and had over 13,000 views.

He said: “We’ve got our own song this year so it’s slightly different.

“If it gets picked up by a big station and gets some play time then that would be great.”
