A BACUP man who was hit by a taxi remained in a serious condition in Preston Royal Hospital last night.

Lee Corless, 30, was struck by the Volkswagen Passat outside the Irwell Inn pub in Burnley Road at 11.55pm on Saturday.

The dad-of-one had been attending a friend’s engagement party at the pub.

He suffered multiple injuries, including a serious injury to his head.

The 41-year-old taxi driver, a man from Keighley, was arrested on Sunday and questioned by police while in custody.

A police spokeswoman said the driver was yesterday released on bail until February 12, pending further enquiries.

Coun Jimmy Eaton, who represents Bacup, said he has concerns about the speed some drivers travel along Burnley Road.

He said: “There’s been a number of accidents on that road over the years.

“Only a few weeks ago, a car crashed into the railings outside Northern Primary School and there have been vehicles overturned along there.”

Police are appealing for witnesses of the incident to come forward.

Sgt Steve Wignall said: “If anyone witnessed what happened I would ask them to contact us on 101.”
