PENDLE MP Andrew Stephenson has welcomed news that the Church of England has voted to allow women bishops, after raising the issue in Parliament.

Last month the General Synod of the Church of England voted by 378 votes to eight to approve a new package of proposals that will enable women to become bishops in the Church of England.

Mr Stephenson said: “The campaign for equality in the church has been long and hard but is now winning out.

“The General Synod has shown just how strongly in favour of change the church now is.

“This is a step forward for women in general and also for the church itself.

“I welcome the prospect of women to be able to become bishops soon.”
