Hoddlesden's annual Carols by Candlelight event to cap great year
2:00pm Saturday 7th December 2013 in News
THE Hoddlesden Millenium Green Trust has reflected on another successful year ahead of its annual Carols by Candlelight event tomorrow. (SUN) Chairwoman Linda Dawson said 2013 had been an important one in the life of the green, not least after it was granted Queen Elizabeth II Field in Trust status, protecting it from any possible future development.
Mrs Dawson first began her mission to convert the disused piece of land into what it is now in 1997, and the dream was realised in 2000.
Earlier this year, having taken part in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge, in conjunction with charity Fields In Trust, the trust ensured the space will remain in place for years to come.
Mrs Dawson said: “In the life of the green, 2013 has seen some significant changes.
“The committee has welcomed new members and new volunteers to help with the green’s maintenance and events have stepped up.
“We have been successful in achieving Queen Elizabeth II Field in Trust Status and attaining our fifth Green Flag award.
“Lloyd Trust Charity Committee made a generous donation enabling us to replace a mowing machine.
“Darwen primary schools’ annual cross country event went ahead in April and our annual Grand Picnic was rescued by a generous grant from the Co-Operative Bank and was very well attended.”
The Millenium Green Trust’s year will culminate in tomorrow night’s carols event, which starts from 6.30pm and music will be provided by Darwen Brass.
Mrs Dawson said: “The advice as always is to wrap up warm and wear sturdy boots.
“After we have warmed up with a good sing, we will catch up over mulled wine and mince pies.
“We hope your presence will add to the magic and that you take home good tidings of comfort and joy.”
