FOR more than two decades, running enthusiasts have been donning their trainers and jogging around Darwen together.

Come rain or shine, members of Darwen Dashers, a running club that caters for all levels of ability, can be seen regularly pounding the streets on a Tuesday or Thursday night.

And it isn’t just about getting sweaty. There is a social aspect to the group which has helped forge some close friendships over the years.

Simon Fox, a member for 15 years, said he enjoyed being part of the group.

He said: “We get to run across the fells on a regular basis which is fantastic. Nothing beats that, really.

“We have four fell-running races a year, three of which have been going for quite some time.

“We introduced the fourth one, which is coming up in the next few weeks, not too long ago.

“On the last race of the year you complete the race in the dark, which adds a certain amount of adrenaline.”

Mr Fox said the group had thrived since it was started 20 years ago and now boasts about 120 members.

He said: “A lot of the members come to every session.

“It is great to have so many people as part of the group.

“It makes the races much more competitive, which always adds that extra bit of spice. It is great that a group like Darwen Dashers exists because it allows people to take part in physical activities on a regular basis.

“It also allows people regular access to the fells, which is fantastic.

“They are great to run on and it is great that so many people enjoy what we do.”

The group meets at the Sunnyhurst pub in Tockholes Road on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7pm.
