PRIME Minister David Cameron is to ‘look carefully’ at how a Pendle councillor, said to be wanted by police for questioning over a murder in Pakistan, was able to meet him at a Downing Street event.

The Lancashire Telegraph revealed last month that Coun Abdul Aziz was invited to an Eid celebration event with Mr Cameron at No 10, despite being named in Pakistan as one of four men wanted for a murder last May.

Yesterday Mr Cameron was quizzed about the visit during Prime Minister's Questions in the House of Commons.

Labour MP Tom Blenkinsop, who represents Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, said: "Last month, Tory councillor Abdul Aziz was at an invite-only party in No 10.

“Councillor Aziz is subject to an arrest warrant in Pakistan in connection to a brutal murder.

"After shaking this man's hand and having photos taken at No 10 with this gentleman, would you now like to say that you think this gentleman should return to Pakistan and face justice?"

In response Mr Cameron said: “I am looking carefully into this case and I will write to you.”

Coun Aziz is named on a document as one of four men wanted for the murder of Muhammad Ilyas in the village of Domian, in the Gujrat district, on May 1, last year.

The document states the incident was an alleged ‘revenge’ killing.

It is alleged four men, armed with a 30 bore pistol and a 44 bore rifle, entered a house in Domian at around 5pm on May 1, and shot Mr Ilyas in the stomach and arm.

Coun Aziz has denied the allegation and said he is ‘determined to clear his name’.

Coun Aziz joined the Conservative group on Pendle Council in September, having been a Labour councillor until May this year.

Labour MP Graham Jones, who represents Hyndburn and Haslingden, has this week written to Conservative Party Chairman Grant Shapps to ask about Coun Aziz’s invite to Downing Street.
