CAMPAIGNERS have welcomed news that a developer has withdrawn an application for an anaerobic digestion plant in Ramsbottom.

Bury Council received 1,028 responses to the application on its planning website, 1,026 objecting to the proposal, and two in favour.

The Peel Environmental proposal was to build a waste site which uses farm and industrial waste to produce power, and bring an additional 1.5million cubic tonnes of landfill to Fletcher Bank Quarry, in Shuttleworth.

Peel said it would now re-submit a fresh application, with additional information to address the concerns, in the new year.

Coun Ian Bevan, who represents Ramsbottom, said: “It feels like a real victory for the area.

“I’m delighted.

“There was a lot of public concern about the plans, not only about the smell which it would produce, but the particles it would send into the air, and the traffic it would bring.”

Kieran Tames, development surveyor for Peel Environmental, said: “We plan to re-submit our planning application in the coming weeks.”

A spokesman for Bury Council said: “I can confirm that Peel Environmental have withdrawn their planning application for the construction of an an-aerobic digestion plant, at Fletcher Bank Quarry, in Shuttleworth”
