YORK CITY manager Nigel Worthington said the first half demolition of Scunthorpe United was the best his team had played since he joined the club.

“Portsmouth was very good over the course of the 90 minutes,” he said reflecting on a 4-1 victory over Scunthorpe United at Bootham Crescent last night.

“But I would take that first 45. When you look at the goals in there and their quality, it was a high standard. I am delighted for the players. They have worked hard.”

Worthington was thrilled with all four first-half goals, particularly the spectacular volley from Ryan Brobbel that brought up the fourth.

But he also reserved praise for Josh Carson’s early opener.

“It was a fantastic goal,” he said of Brobbel’s strike.

“It was a great ball in from Luke O’Neill. He has hit it right on the bottom and it has flown into the top corner.

“The technique, and accuracy, of Brobbel’s effort on goal was first-class.”

He added: “I thought Carson got us going straight away with a fantastic run up the middle for his goal. He got his just rewards.”

Worthington admitted to not being entirely satisfied with his side unable to keep a clean sheet after Sam Winnall scored in the opening minutes of the second half, and he also warned against over-confidence ahead of Saturday’s trip to Cheltenham.

“I am never happy and I would have loved a clean sheet but it is a big three points and that’s the main thing. We need lots of them and we will get our feet on the ground.”
