North West self-harm rate higher than any other
2:34pm Tuesday 8th October 2013 in News
THE North West has a higher rate of self-harming among children than any other English region, new figures show.
A report by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) showed 3,081 girls between the ages of ten and 19 received hospital treatment for self-harm between June 2012 and June this year, as well as 817 boys. The lowest rates were in the North East, with 1,121 girls and 352 boys.
HSCIC chair Kingsley Manning said: “It [the report] highlights the differing reasons why children are coming through hospital doors in this country and in particular the marked variation between boys and girls in the conditions they are being treated for.”
