All for one and one-sie for all! Bacup cancer couple say thanks to staff

A COUPLE who each fought cancer – more than a decade apart – have paid tribute to the medics who helped them battle through.
And to say a huge thank-you to the staff at Rosemere Cancer Centre, Howard and Christine Warren pulled out all the stops.
The husband and wife, who live in Stanley Mount, Bacup, are already past masters at fundraising for a host of cancer causes.
But when retired lift engineer Howard, 72, got the all-clear from prostate cancer a fortnight ago, after seven weeks of radiotherapy, they really wanted to push the boat out even further.
Last night they were on course to raise thousands of pounds with a ‘onesie-themed’ family fun day at Bacup Cricket Club, featuring a host of talent.
Everyone attending was ordered by Howard and Christine, who donned crocodile and lamb all-in-ones, to come dressed accordingly – or pay a forfeit.
Generous DJs and artistes including Chris Duerden, John Grogan, Peter Fell, Chris Shannon and Rache Spencer, alongside the famed Britannia Coconutters, all gave their services for free. Howard, who earned £200 for the cause with a fancy dress collection at Bacup Morrisons 24 hours earlier, said: “The whole town has chipped in – entertainers, restaurants, shops, everyone.”
Great-grandmother Christine, 62, has been behind countless charity events at the George and Dragon pub, in Rochdale Road, raising more than £15,000 for the likes of Cancer Research, Rossendale Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Care.
“We just wanted to give something back to the staff at Rosemere because they’ve been brilliant for both of us,” she added.
Children’s fun fair rides, a grand raffle and buffet were also laid on for the coffers of the cancer centre, at the Royal Preston Hospital.
