‘Good’ result as Great Harwood school wins inspectors’ praise
A PRIMARY school has been praised as ‘good’ by Ofsted less than three years after being in special measures.
Ofsted inspectors said Great Harwood St John’s CE School had a rich curriculum, exciting activities and left pupils with ‘happy memories of school’.
The news is a particular source of pride for staff as the school was in special measures from 2009 until the last report in 2011 rated the school satisfactory.
The headteacher Tracey Parker said: “We are absolutely thrilled at this news, and extremely proud of all the hard work and dedication that our children, staff, governors, and county council advisers provide on a daily basis.
“All the effort has been worthwhile, and I am confident we will go from str-ength to strength. We are looking forward to the future.
“On behalf of the staff and governors, I’d like to thank all those who have been involved in the school over the past few years.”
The report said the school provided many exciting activities that widen- ed pupils’ understanding of the wider world.
Inspectors said: “Outstanding teaching was seen.
“Teachers make lessons enjoyable. Pupils grow in confidence, and this raises their aspirations for the future.”
New starters at the school made good progress, inspectors said, and acad-emic standards were rising.
Support for pupils with additional needs, such as those with disabilities, or educational difficulties, was good.
The report said: “In the excellent lessons, teachers’ enthusiasm and high aspirations for the pupils leads to brisk pace and challenging activities.
“Questions are thought-provoking and pupils’ interest is sustained through- out the lesson.”
Pupils’ behaviour was rated as good, with little bullying and no racist behaviour.
Inspectors found that pupils were polite, felt valued, and knew how to keep themselves safe.
County Coun Nikki Hennessey, lead member for schools, said: “I’m really pleased to hear this news about Great Harwood St John’s. Well done to them.
“Our advisers have been working with the school, and we’re all very proud of this result.”
