Debate planned on Pendle sports pitch fees
3:17pm Thursday 26th September 2013 in News
COUNCILLORS will have the final say on controversial proposals to reintroduce charges for sports pitches in Pendle for under-16 teams.
But the authority has revealed that it must plug a £5million spending gap and is considering a number of possible income generation schemes.
Town hall bosses have drawn up a sliding scale of fees for different pitch sizes, ranging from £10 to seven-a-side games to £15 for 11-a-side fixtures.
Other charges were also being considered, for phasing in from April 1 next year, for providing changing room facilities at municipal sports grounds.
Four years ago the authority made a decision agreeing not to charge pitch fees for under-16s, as part of moves to promote healthier lifestyles among youngsters.
But members of the council’s executive have already voted to reject the policy, which it was said would only generate around £5,000 per year for the town hall coffers, based on usage figures for the 2012-13 financial year.
The issue has now been referred to a meeting of the full council, at Nelson Town Hall tonight, for a final decision.
