East Lancs MP encouraged by government efforts to combat child sexual grooming
AN MP has said talks with the Policing Minister over efforts to tackle child sexual grooming in East Lancashire were ‘constructive’.
County police have led the way in drawing up strategies, through the ongoing work of Operations Engage and Freedom.
And the Lancashire Telegraph highlighted the issue several years ago, with our Keep Them Safe campaign, long before the multiple arrests and convictions in Rochdale.
Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson has now met with Damian Green, the Policing Minister, to discuss some of the lessons learned in Blackburn, Burnley and Hyndburn, and Whitehall efforts to address the matter.
The talks centred not only on the National Group on Sexual Violence against Children and Vulnerable People, but the need to promote greater partnership work between different agencies, to share information on possible high-risk cases.
Mr Stephenson said: “I was pleased that the minister took time to talk to me about child sexual grooming.
“Unfortunately, our area has been linked to some of these horrendous crimes.
“People are rightfully concerned about whether crimes are being detected quickly enough and critically, whether victims and their families are getting the support they need.
“I was encouraged to hear about the efforts being made by the government and took the opportunity of updating the minister on some of the excellent work that is being done locally.”
Earlier this month, Lancashire Police carried out a week-long awareness campaign on child sexual exploitation, including dawn raids, which also led to 22 arrests across the county.
