Mum-to-be from Darwen wins hospice lottery
A DARWEN mum-to-be got a grand surprise just a week before giving birth, when she won a hospice lottery.
Nicola Lee was stunned to discover her number had come up in the East Lancashire Hospice draw.
The 34-year-old, of Wyre Crescent, had just started maternity leave when she got a call from the hospice on Friday to let her know she had won the £1,000 top prize in the weekly draw.
Mrs Lee, who works in the endoscopy unit at Burnley General Hospital, said: “I was shocked and didn’t believe it at first but it has come at a great time and is a nice surprise.
“I have been in the hospice lottery for 16 years and this is my first win, so it was worth waiting for.
“I have been a hospice lottery member since I was 18 because it is such a good local cause and you never know when you or someone you know might need it.
“I would have treated myself with the money but I would rather spend it on the baby now.
“I am going to treat my little one to some nice presents and start Christmas shopping.”
Hospice fundraiser Kimberley Hall said: “It is always rewarding to call up the lottery winners on a Friday who have won the top prizes and we were made up when Nicola said she was about to have a baby.
“It has come at a great time for her, but there is never a bad time to win. We are grateful to Nicola for the support she has given to the hospice by being a lottery member for such a long time.”
