A GRANDMOTHER with a history of heart problems has made a rousing recovery to star in her own exercise training film.
Dorothy Hickey, 84, has suffered a series of heart problems in recent years, which culminated in her being diagnosed with heart failure in 2011.
As part of her recovery, Dorothy, from Darwen, was referred to Blackburn with Darwen Council’s cardiac rehabilitation programme, ‘Active Living’, part of the Re:fresh programme at Darwen Leisure Centre.
Mrs Hickey said she attended a one-hour structured exercise session, twice a week, and was impressed with her recovery.
She said: “I have been through it with my heart problems but once I was able, I started going to the sessions which gave me lots of confidence.
“That was one thing I never wanted to lose as I have always been a confident person.
“The work helped strengthen me and introduced me to loads of people in a similar boat which inspired me to make a success of it.”
Dorothy was used as a case study during a conference of the British Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (BACPR) Exercise Professionals Group, which involved being filmed performing exercises.
It was such a hit that she did another set of filming for a training course delivered to healthcare and exercise professionals delivering cardiac rehabilitation services nationwide.
Dorothy said: “I have danced all my life doing ballet, tap and ballroom so I was happy to do something fun like this.
“I just wanted to be sure I could physically cope with it.
“I really enjoyed the experience.
“I told my three sons about it and they just laughed at me, but they were very proud.”
Blackburn with Darwen Council executive member for health and adult social care Coun Mohammed Khan said: “Dorothy has been through a lot and for her to make such a fantastic recovery and star in these films should act as an inspiration to everybody else who finds themself in a similar position.”
