East Lancashire heart op mum will do 5k run
5:00pm Friday 20th September 2013 in News
A MUM-OF-THREE is set to take part in a 5k run just three months after undergoing major heart surgery.
Elizabeth Pollard, 36, of Wheatley Lane Road, Fence, was born with a leaking mitral valve and a hole in her heart and had her first operation six years ago.
Doctors had to wait as long as possible after she was born before she underwent the first operation because of the limited number of times it is safe to conduct it.
But despite having her most recent surgery to replace the mitral valve and repair the tricuspid valve in June, she is now feeling fit enough to take part in the Subway Helping Hearts event in Manchester’s Heaton Park with her children Jack, 12, Isabelle, five, Harry, three, and husband Jonathan.
She is hoping to raise as much money as possible for the Heart Research UK, which aims to prevent, treat and cure heart disease.
Elizabeth said: “I was lucky enough to be operated on by fantastic surgeons who carried out complex procedures with amazing skill.
“It’s thanks to research into the heart that these operations and procedures can be completed.
“This said, much more research is needed in order to know as much as they can about the heart and to help more people. I really hope our small contribution will help to do this and that others in the local community will sign up to help fund such a great and much needed cause.”
Barbara Harpham, National Director of Heart Research UK said: “It’s great that Elizabeth and her family are taking part in the Family 5K event and we hope they have a lovely day.
“We are thrilled to be working with the Subway brand to encourage a better lifestyle for the whole family. The Subway Helping Hearts Family 5K will allow you to raise money for your local community whilst enjoying a fun family day out.”
